Topic: Smoking models..

No.. I'm not talking about really hot/sexy models..LOL. I mean smokers!

I woulda' bet that models would generally stay away from it for obvious reasons.. i.e. the cancer threat and the effects on the skin over time! But, apparently, it's the fashionable "dieting" aid! Particularly amongst female models! It helps them manage their appetite etc, etc!

Is that really enough to justify the harm it does to their bodies..?!? not to mention the smell it leaves on everything!

What a load of bollox!  It's just excuse after excuse with some people.  It helps with dieting?  If any model tries that one she is TOTALLY stupid!   Member Image

Never smoked, never will.  That's why my skin is fresh and peachy at 28!   Member Image

Think a lot of the good skin thing is to do with genes Cavy...

I've smoked for near on 20 years and yet, at almost 37 years old I got ID'd the other week when I was at the shop.

Am about to give up due to the birth of my first child but I'll never be one of those god awful reformed smokers.

As for models... sometimes you might wanna have it to add a little bit of edge. It shows a healthy disregard for safety. A lot of people also find it sexy... which is why there are infinitely more websites dedicated to sexy smokers than sexy non smokers... Member Image

Can't agree that it works for dieting though... else I wouldnt be the shape I am...

Smoking doesn't help aid weight loss but i do have a lot of friends who say it stops them getting as hungry when there on diets, completly unproffessional though if youre on a shoot unless the photographer states there ok with it, i still wouldn't say its worth it though. Member Image Member Image

No, all smokers will develop bad skin at some point because it starves your skin of oxygen, it's a fact.  I've seen many photos of Kate Moss without make up and she has appalling skin.  Many young smokers I see have old looking skin.  It's not a good message to send out that smoking doesn't affect you negatively because it's wrong.

Don't think anyone is saying it won't affect you negatively... just that it affects people differently...

Life expectancy is reduced by anywhere between 7 and 14 years - depending on who is talking about it... and you are less likely to be as fit if you do... but many a top athelete have been heavy smokers and many also live long lives.

And as Bill Hicks said:

"I have something to tell you non-smokers that I know for a fact that you don't know, and I feel it's my duty to pass on information at all times. Ready?. . . . Non-smokers die every day . . . Enjoy your evening. See, I know that you entertain this eternal life fantasy because you've chosen not to smoke, but let me be the 1st to POP that bubble and bring you hurling back to reality. . . You're dead too."

I'm not talking about whether smoking kills or not, I'm saying smokers, more often than not, have worse skin than non smokers.  I've been told time and time again my skin through the lens looks totally different to that of a smoker's, this is purely from my own experience.

Right, so we're not free to discuss anything, apparently.  Sorry, I hadn't realised you had the authoritative around here.    Member Image

no! we're not bashing smokers here! personally, I'm just surprised that models, and so many of them do smoke at all. with the possible effects (cancer and many other health risks) so well published!

im training as a dancer as well as trying to do some modeling on the side, n i got given the opportunity to work with the London Royal Ballet a few years ago and nearly all of those dancers smoke. You would never think it because the training is so intense and you have to be ober fit, bit it is because it suppresses your appetite and prima ballerinas have to be tiny.
i dont know if its the same reason why models smoke or if it is just purely for the image that goes with it. How ever if someone wants to smoke their health away let them!
